Southcentral Alaska Wilds & Wildlife - (WAW-309)

Aug 10-14, 2009

This is an epic mutli-faceted adventure. Grand landscapes, serene wilderness, and unsurpassed beauty. This tour will introduce you to many of the icons that distinguish Alaska as a pinnacle of nature photography. Sea birds, marine mammals, calving glaciers, gigantic moose and bear, professionally led hiking and kayaking excursions, standing on a glacier at sunset, and if the weather cooperates... a stunning view of the tallest mountain in North America, Denali. This is one of those trips that will keep you talking for years, and generate memories and new friendships that will last a lifetime. This is a tour geared towards a more active participant, however the kayaking portion requires no experience.

Itinerary (subject tochange)

Day 1
9:00 AM - Meet in Anchorage at (MEETING POINT TO BE DECIDED) for introductions and orientation. Travel south towards Seward, stopping along the way to photograph wildlife near Turnagain Arm. We will also visit a wildlife park, where large mammals are rehabilitated. You will be able to see bear, musk ox, caribou, buffalo, and moose up close. Once arriving at our hotel in Seward, you will have the option to visit Seward’s world famous Sea Life Center (entry fee not included in tour cost) or hiking near Exit Glacier.

Day 2
Today is a real treat. Wehave exclusive use of a chartered boat to explore Kenai Fjords National Park. Stunning seabird colonies, vertical cliffs climbing hundreds of feet out of the ocean, lush fjords and calving glaciers. With any luck, we’ll also drift along as humpback whales surface and possibly breach near us. Upon returning to Seward, the Sea Life Center and Exit Glacier are again just two of your options. Or you can do some tourist things and hang out in Seward’s picturesque small boat harbor.

Day 3
If adventure is your idea of fun, today is sure to please. Professional sea kayaking guides will take us into Resurrection Bay, and if time allows we will explore historic Fort McGilvary, an abandoned WWII bunker with a maze of underground passages. Once we get done kayaking, we will head north again, to Wasilla - where we will spend the night.

Day 4
In the morning we will make the short but picturesque drive to Hatcher’s Pass, high in the Talkeetna Mountains. We will do some exploring in the area, at the historic Independence Mine, and around the blue green waters of Summit Lake. Then we will drive east and have dinner overlooking our next adventure, sunset hiking on Matanuska Glacier.

Day 5
Our final day will be spent near Talkeetna, hoping for a clear day to offer us a view of North America’s tallest mountain, Denali. Even if the Alaska Range is enshrouded by clouds, Talkeetna has a lot to offer. We will spend a relaxing day here, but if the forecast looks really good, we may drive further north to another of the overlooks to get an even closer view of Denali. After this amazing trip comes to an end, we will take you back to Anchorage where you will continue your journey on your own. Lodging tonight is not included in this tour package.
