Bald Eagles of Homer, Alaska - (HBE-109)

January 5 - 9, 2009

Every winter, hundreds of bald eagles make the migration to the beautiful ocean-side city of Homer, Alaska. Many of the eagles spend the majority of their time on “the Spit”, a narrow peninsula of land that juts out into Kachemak Bay. Across the bay, snow-covered mountains and glacier-filled valleys make up a breath-taking panoramic backdrop. But, it is the eagles that will continually stun you. Seven foot wing spans, razor sharp talons, beautifully crested white heads. These powerful and graceful birds will be all around you. The eagles here are accustomed to birders and photographers and allow unmatched viewing proximity. Each morning we will photograph the eagles as they feed, and again in the afternoon as the sun sets. Hundreds of them will gather within a few feet of our viewing area, and the many shrill calls will stay with you for a lifetime. This is a rare look at our national bird, but time is limited. In just two years, Jean Keene (The Eagle Lady) will no longer be allowed to feed the eagles and they will probably begin to disperse from the area. An area that has become synonymous with the bald eagle will likely never see them again in these numbers.
Join us for this five day, four night visit with the Bald Eagles of Homer.
