Bald Eagles of Haines, Alaska - (BEH-209)

Nov 16 - 20, 2009

Haines, Alaska, is the Bald Eagle capital of the world. In the early winter of each year, over four thousand Bald Eagles converge on the Chilkat River for a late run of salmon. The waters of the Chilkat River remain open due to warm water springs in the area, allowing the Eagles to feed later into the year. This is a birders paradise, sometimes a dozen or more Eagles can be perched in a single tree. Eagles swoop down from their high perch, their talons outstretched, and snatch salmon from the open water. Eagles defend their catch from others, tearing quickly into the fish, and inhaling large chunks of chum salmon with each bite. They are specially designed birds of prey; razor sharp talons and beaks, and powerful wings that can effortlessly keep them aloft for long periods of time.
In addition to great photography opportunities, the tour will cover instruction as well.
Once the light has faded, we will move to a relaxed classroom setting. Possible topics to be covered: digital photography, the digital darkroom (including programs such as Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop), digital image management and archiving options, digital printmaking, and open forums for discussion.

Transportation (included from Haines). We recommend catching the 4 1/2 hour ferry ride from Juneau at least one day before the tour begins. Although this portion of your journey is not included in the cost of the tour, we would be happy to recommend some travel agencies and resources for you to plan your travel needs with. Also, contact the Alaska Marine Highway System at 1-800-642-0066.

Lodging (included) will be double occupancy and is located in downtown Haines.

Meals (although not included) will be a great time to share stories and pick the brains of both of your guides, as well as fellow participants. Use this time to get to know each other, share all the great photographs you’ve taken, and just have a good time. Our tours are not only about photography, but also about making friends and building relationships.
